Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

your Hereafter: for Allah revealed to one of His prophets, saying, “Tell your people: if sin were committed in one of the dwellings of Paradise, it would bring ruin upon it.”

As for your worldly life, the poet has said:
People are only with the world and him who owns it;
whichever way it turns for him one day, they turn as well.
They revere the brother of wealth, but should the world pounce
on him one day with what he dislikes, they pounce upon him.

al-Sarrāj said: I heard Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā relate, “I set out with Wahb ibn Jarīr to Mecca. When we reached it, hardship befell us, and I heard Wahb recite:
He who delivered you from the depths of Dhamah
and from torrents that surged through brimming valleys
is surely able to complete His favor upon you.”

Abū ʿAmr al-Mustamlī said: I heard Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā say, “I have taken Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal as an imam between myself and my Lord.”

al-Ḥākim said: I heard Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Zayd—an upright and reliable man—say, “I heard Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī. I was standing over him after the session had ended, a pen in my hand. A drop of ink fell on his garment, whereupon he lifted his head toward me and said, ‘Do you think I will still love you after this?!’”

al-Ḥākim said: I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad al-Fāmī; I heard Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan; I heard Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā say, “I never saw a book in the hand of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī. Whatever I heard from him was from his memory.”

Abū ʿAmr al-Mustamlī said: I heard Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā; Sufyān ibn Yaḥyā al-Wāsiṭī—an elderly, short man with a reddish head and beard—narrated to me. I wrote down four hadiths from him in Wāsiṭ in the year 199 AH.
