among them. They captured a large number of camels, and each man’s portion came to twelve animals. Afterwards they were granted an extra camel apiece as a bonus, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not alter that ruling. Agreed upon.

The Expedition of Kaʿb ibn ʿUmayr

Al-Waqidi relates: Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah told us, on the authority of al-Zuhri, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Kaʿb ibn ʿUmayr al-Ghifari with fifteen men until they reached Dhat Atlah in the Syrian lands. There they found a large force gathered. They called them to Islam, but the people refused and showered them with arrows. When the Muslims saw this, they fought back with great determination until they were all killed. One man, however, wounded and lying among the slain, managed to slip away. When the night air cooled, he dragged himself to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet considered dispatching another detachment against them, but then learned that the enemy had moved elsewhere, so he let them be. Allah knows best.
