104 – Al-Dhuhlī: Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh and his son * (Kh, 4)
Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Fāris b. Dhuʾayb—an imam, erudite scholar, ḥāfiẓ, and consummate authority; Shaykh al-Islām, leading scholar of the East, and chief traditionist of Khurāsān—Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Dhuhlī, their client, from Nīshāpūr.
He was born in the early seventies of the second century AH.
He studied with the two Hafses—Hafs b. ʿAbd Allāh and Hafs b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—together with al-Ḥusayn b. al-Walīd, ʿAlī b. Ibrāhīm al-Bunānī, Makkī b. Ibrāhīm, and ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. Shaqīq in Nīshāpūr.
In 197 AH, the year Wakīʿ died, he set out on his travels; in Rayy he transcribed hadith from Yaḥyā b. al-Ḍurays and others of that stratum.
Al-Ḥākim adds that while in Iṣfahān he also recorded hadith from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī.
