The Expedition of Shujaʿ ibn Wahb al-Asadi
Al-Waqidi relates: Ibn Abi Sabrah told me, on the authority of Ishaq ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Furwah, from ʿUmar ibn al-Hakam, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched Shujaʿ ibn Wahb with twenty-four men against a contingent from Hawazin, instructing him to raid them. Ibn Abi Sabrah continues: I reported this to Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthman, who said, “That account is false. During that raid they also captured women who were present, including a comely young girl. They brought them to Medina, and later their people came as Muslims and appealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning the captives. The Prophet ﷺ then spoke with Shujaʿ and his companions about returning them, and they did so.”
Ibn Abi Sabrah adds: I informed an elder from the Ansar of this, and he said, “As for the attractive girl, Shujaʿ bought her for a price and had relations with her. When the delegation arrived, he offered her the choice, and she chose Shujaʿ. He was killed on the day of al-Yamama while she was still with him.”
