Al-Ismaʿili narrated: ʿAbd Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn Sayyār al-Farhayāni informed us, saying:
“I heard them relate that when ʿAli ibn al-Madini arrived in Baghdad and the people flocked to him, they later asked him, after the gathering dispersed, ‘Whom did you find to be the shrewdest of the attendees?’ He answered, ‘This young man al-Mukharrimi.’
Al-Ismaʿili also said: Al-Farhayāni related to us: ‘I heard al-Mukharrimi recount:
“One day Abu Khaythama asked, ‘How many reports do you preserve that Ibn Jurayj transmits from his father?’ Yahya ibn Maʿin was present but did not venture a single reply, whereas I stepped forward and supplied the answers.” Al-Farhayāni added, “We used to describe al-Mukharrimi as exceptionally knowledgeable.”
We then mentioned this to a hadith scholar named ʿUmar ibn Ismaʿil al-Abiywardi (1). He said, “Kaylaja (2) provided me with several chapters. The hadith material there is rare, and I will list for you some of those chapters so that you may question al-Mukharrimi about them.” He cited, for example, the issue of someone who manages to join the witr prayer: some authorities say he should recite the tashahhud, while others say he should not.
When we went to al-Mukharrimi and asked him, he replied, “This is not your field—what need have you of it?” He thought of us as people who pursued the Musnad, so we said, “Tell us what you have on the point.” Right there on the spot he related six hadiths to us.
We returned to the man who had directed us and said, “He dictated six hadiths on the matter.” He exclaimed, “That is something truly astonishing!” (3)
ʿAbd al-Bāqi ibn Qāniʿ said: “He died in 254 AH.”
Ibn Ḥibbān said: “He died in 260 AH, or a little before or after that.”
