O Time, you have bruised my heart by taking him away;
so who is there that can hurl this grief back upon Time itself?
I shall submit to Allah’s decree and be content,
and I will mend the gap this loss has torn in the family with patience.
Yazīd ibn Muḥammad al-Azdī said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Qurashī narrated to me; I heard ʿAlī ibn Ḥarb say:
“We were in the company of Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah when a man began to say to him, ‘O Abū Muḥammad, the hadith: “Woe to the Arabs for an evil that has drawn near” (1).’
Sufyān turned away, but the man kept repeating the request while Sufyān ignored him. When he persisted, Sufyān said to him, ‘Woe to you! How long will you keen for the Arabs from today forward? Woe to the Nabataeans (2) for an evil that has already descended.’ ”
From the higher-chain transmissions (ʿawālī) of ʿAlī ibn Ḥarb I obtained four fascicles: one is with Abū al-Qāsim ibn Ṣaṣrā, and three are with Abū al-Qāsim al-Sibt.
Their brother—the shaykh, the learned scholar and ḥadith transmitter—

He heard ḥadith from: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā, Qabīṣah, Khalād ibn Yaḥyā, and Abū Nuʿaym.
