Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

They replied, “On the contrary, he is an imam—one of the leading scholars of the Muslims.”
So the governor released him and asked that he pardon him (1).
This report is questionable—Allah knows best.
He died in Rajab of the year 254 AH (2).
In that same year also passed away: Ibrāhīm ibn Mujashshir (3); Salm ibn Junādah; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dārimī; Ziyād ibn Yaḥyā al-Ḥassānī; Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr al-Ṭūsī, the devotee; Muḥammad ibn Hāshim al-Baʿlabakkī; al-Marrār ibn Ḥammūyah; ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Kāẓim al-Ḥusaynī, one of the Twelve (4); and Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn ʿAbbūd in Damascus.

(1) The full report is recorded in Tarikh Baghdad, vol. 13, pp. 182–183. (2) Ibn Zabr expressed the same view. See Tarikh Baghdad, vol. 13, p. 181, where Ibrahim b. Abd Allah b. al-Junayd relates: “Yahya b. Maʿin was asked—while I was present—about Muʾammal b. Ihab, and he seemed to rate him as weak.” Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Nasaʾi said: “Muʾammal b. Ihab is unobjectionable,” and on another occasion: “reliable.” Ibn Abi Hatim records in al-Jarh wa-al-taʿdil, 8/275: “My father was asked about him and replied, ‘truthful.’” Ibn Hajar states in Tahdhib al-tahdhib, 10/382: “Ibn Hibban listed him among the trustworthy,” and Maslama b. Qasim judged him “reliable and truthful.” (3) The manuscript reads “Muhbathar,” which is incorrect. This Ibrahim is weak; see his entries in Tarikh Baghdad, 6/184–185; Mizan al-iʿtidal, 1/55; Lisan al-mizan, 1/95; and al-Ikmal, 7/213. (4) The Imamiyya Ithna Ashariyya (Twelver Shiʿites) believe that the divinely ordained succession (wasiyya) to the imamate passed from Ali b. Abi Talib to his sons al-Hasan and then al-Husayn, and thereafter to nine descendants of al-Husayn, making twelve imams in total. After al-Husayn came Ali Zayn al-Abidin, Muhammad al-Baqir, Jaʿfar al-Sadiq, Musa al-Kazim, Ali al-Rida, Muhammad al-Taqi, Ali al-Hadi, al-Hasan al-Askari, and finally Muhammad al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, who, according to their doctrine, entered an underground occultation in Samarra in 265 AH while still a child under his mother’s gaze and has not been seen since. See al-Milal wa-al-nihal, p. 108 ff.
