Muḥammad—Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar informed us; Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Sinān narrated to us; Yazīd narrated to us; Sharik reported to us, from Muḥammad ibn Juhādah, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Paradise consists of one hundred levels; between each two levels lies a distance of five hundred years.” (1)
90 – Muʾammal ibn Ihāb ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Qufl al-Rabiʿī * (D, S)
The imam, hadith master, and trustworthy narrator, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Rabiʿī, originally from Kūfa and later resident in Ramla.
It is also reported that his lineage is “ibn Qufl ibn Sadal,” each syllable fully vocalized.
He was born around 180 AH, or slightly earlier.
(1) Ibn Kathir records the report in Al-Nihaya 2/373 through the chain of Abu Bakr ibn Abi Dawud. Ahmad relates it in his Musnad 2/292 via Yazid ibn Harun with the same isnad, with the wording: “Paradise consists of one hundred ranks; the distance between two ranks is one hundred years.” Al-Tirmidhi (2529) transmits it through Abbas al-Anbari → Yazid ibn Harun → Israil → Muhammad ibn Juhada → Ata → Abu Hurayra … and declares: “This hadith is hasan gharib.”
A supporting narration comes from Ubadah ibn al-Samit: al-Tirmidhi (2531) and Ahmad 5/316, 321 cite it through Hammam ibn Yahya → Zayd ibn Aslam → Ata ibn Yasar → Ubadah ibn al-Samit; Al-Hakim (1/80) judged it authentic and al-Dhahabi agreed. Ahmad 5/240-241, Ibn Majah (4331) and al-Tirmidhi (2530) also report it through two routes from Zayd ibn Aslam → Ata ibn Yasar → Muadh with the wording: “Paradise has one hundred ranks; between every two ranks is a journey of one hundred years,” while another version says, “as far as between heaven and earth.” Ahmad 2/335, 339 and al-Bukhari 6/9 (Book of Jihad, chapter on the ranks of those who strive in Allah’s cause) and 13/404 (Book of Tawhid, chapter ‘And His Throne was on the water’) narrate it through Fulayh → Hilal ibn Ali → Ata ibn Yasar → Abu Hurayra, from the Prophet ﷺ, with the wording: “In Paradise there are one hundred ranks that Allah has prepared for those who fight in His path; the span between two ranks is like that between heaven and earth.”
(2) The name is pronounced with a kasrah on the first letter and a single b. See Al-Taqrib.
