Maḥmūd ibn Ghaylān said, “Ishāq ibn Rāhwayh heard two ḥadiths from me” (1).
Al-Ḥākim reported: “Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh of Marw informed us; Abū Rajāʾ Muḥammad ibn Ḥamdawayh narrated to us, saying:
‘Maḥmūd ibn Ghaylān set out for the pilgrimage in 246 AH. He was then returned to Marw and died with ten days remaining of Dhū al-Qaʿdah in 249 AH’” (2).
That is how it is recorded in al-Ḥākim’s History, yet the correct date is that he passed away in Ramaḍān, 239 AH.
A number of Maḥmūd ibn Ghaylān’s elevated isnāds have reached me.

Muslimah stated: “He is a trustworthy Marwazi.” Ibn Abi Hatim records in al-Jarh wa-l-Ta‘dil, vol. 8, p. 291, that when his father was asked about him he replied, “Trustworthy.”
