77 – Maḥmūd ibn Ghaylān al-ʿAdawī, their client (Kh, M, T, S, Q)
The imam, ḥāfiẓ, and authoritative scholar; Abū Aḥmad al-ʿAdawī, their client, al-Marwazī—one of the foremost imams of tradition.
He narrated from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā, al-Walīd ibn Muslim, Abū Muʿāwiyah, Wakīʿ, Yaḥyā ibn Sulaym al-Ṭāʾifī, ʿAbd al-Razzāq, and their contemporaries. His transmissions were abundant and precise, and he was counted among the “knights” of ḥadith.
Transmitters from him include the compilers of the major collections—save Abū Dāwūd—as well as Abū Zurʿah, Abū Ḥātim, Muṭayyin, al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān, al-Haytham ibn Khalaf, Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī, Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Ṭālib, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sarrāj, Jaʿfar ibn Aḥmad ibn Naṣr, Muḥammad ibn Shādhān, Ibn Khuzaymah, and a host of others.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “I know him to be a man of ḥadith, devoted to the sunnah; he was imprisoned over the Qur’an” (2).
Al-Nasāʾī said, “Reliable” (3).
