Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad, ʿAbd al-Wali ibn Rafiʿ, Ahmad ibn Hibat Allah, ʿIsa ibn Barakah, and a number of others related to us, saying:
ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar informed us; Saʿid ibn Ahmad ibn al-Bannaʾ informed us—while I was present in the fourth session—in the year 549 AH.
Abu Nasr Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Hashimi informed us; Muhammad ibn ʿUmar Zunbur related to us; Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Saʿid narrated to us; ʿUbadah al-Saffar narrated to us; Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us; Israʾil narrated to us, from Mansur and al-Aʿmash. (Another chain follows:)
Faḍl ibn Sahl also narrated to us; al-Aswad ibn ʿAmir narrated to us; Israʾil informed us, from Mansur and al-Aʿmash. Zuhayr ibn Muhammad and Ibn Karamah likewise narrated to us—and the wording is his—saying:
ʿUbayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us; Israʾil narrated to us, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbd Allah, who said:
We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a military expedition—or in a cave; Yahya ibn Adam said: “in a cave”—when the verse was revealed to him: “By those sent forth in succession” (Qur’an 77:1). We were receiving it directly from his lips when a snake suddenly appeared. We rushed toward it, but it out-paced us and disappeared into its hole.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “It has been shielded from your harm, and you have been shielded from its harm.”
Al-Bukhari recorded it (1) through the transmission of ʿUbadah.
Those who died the same year include: Abu Muhammad al-Darimi in Samarqand; ʿAbd Allah ibn Hashim al-Tusi; ʿUtaīq ibn Muhammad in Nishapur; ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Ziyad al-Qaṭawani; ʿAbd al-Ghani ibn Rifaʿah in Egypt; al-Muʿtazz bi-Llah—he was killed; Muhammad ibn Harb al-Nashaʾi; Abu Yahya Ṣaʿiqah; Musa ibn ʿAmir al-Murri; Muhammad ibn Karram, founder of the Karramiyyah; al-Jahiz; and Abu Hatim—though there is some disagreement concerning the last two.
