Then the eighth year after the Hijrah began:
Al-Wāqidī said: Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to me, from his uncle Ibn Shihāb, who said: Ibn Abī al-ʿAwjāʾ al-Sulamī set out with fifty men toward the Banū Sulaym. A spy for the Banū Sulaym was with the party, and once they had left Madinah the spy slipped away to his people and warned them. They mustered a large force, and Ibn Abī al-ʿAwjāʾ reached them while they were fully prepared. When the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw their numbers, they first invited them to accept Islam, but the tribesmen answered with a volley of arrows and would not listen. A short clash followed; reinforcements kept arriving for the Banū Sulaym until they surrounded the Muslims. They fought until most of the Muslim detachment was killed. Ibn Abī al-ʿAwjāʾ himself was wounded and left among the slain, yet he managed to drag himself away and eventually reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, arriving in Madinah at the beginning of Ṣafar.
The Conversion of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ and Khālid ibn al-Walīd
In that same year ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ and Khālid ibn al-Walīd embraced Islam.
Al-Wāqidī said: ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jaʿfar told us, from his father, who said: ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ recounted, “I kept my distance from Islam and opposed it. I was present at Badr on the side of the idolaters and survived; I was present at Uḥud and the Trench and survived. So I said to myself…”
