Al-Wāqidī said: Ibn Abī Ḥabībah narrated to me, from Dāwūd ibn al-Ḥuṣayn, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that ʿUmārah bint Ḥamzah and her mother Salmā bint ʿUmays were in Mecca. When the Prophet ﷺ arrived, ʿAlī spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying, “Why should we leave our cousin’s daughter, an orphan, in the midst of the polytheists?” The Prophet did not prohibit bringing her out, so he took her with him. Zayd ibn Ḥārithah then spoke up—for he was Ḥamzah’s executor, and the Prophet ﷺ had established a bond of brotherhood between them. The report continues: the Prophet ﷺ ruled that custody of the girl be given to Jaʿfar, saying, “Her maternal aunt is under your protection, and it is not lawful to marry a woman together with her maternal or paternal aunt.”
Ibn Shihāb also related that when the Prophet ﷺ returned from his ʿumrah in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year 7 AH, he dispatched Ibn Abī al-ʿAwjāʾ with fifty men to the Banū Sulaym, as will be detailed later.
