al-Bāqī, and ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṭūsī (1). Sunqur ibn ʿAbd Allāh in Aleppo likewise related to us; ʿAbd al-Laṭīf ibn Yūsuf, ʿAbd al-Laṭīf ibn Muḥammad, Anjab al-Ḥammāmī, ʿAlī ibn Abī al-Fakhār, and Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Sabbāk also transmitted the report. Abū al-Maʿālī ibn al-Rafīʿ informed us as well, and it was read aloud to us by Muḥammad ibn al-Khaḍir in Ḥarrān—together with several others—who all said:
“Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Bāqī narrated to us,” and the same wording was given by al-Ṭūsī: “Mālik ibn Aḥmad al-Bānyāsī told us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Mūsā ibn al-Qāsim conveyed it to us; Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad al-Hāshimī dictated it; Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj narrated it; ʿAbd al-Salām—namely, the son of Ḥarb—reported from Khuṣayf, from Abū ʿUbaydah, from ʿAbd Allāh that:
The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘For every thirty head of cattle, one male or female yearling is due; and for every forty, a two-year-old cow.’
Al-Tirmidhī also recorded it (2) through the chain of al-Ashajj, and our chain to him is of higher rank.
In that same year seven there died: al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah, ʿAlī ibn Khushram, and Zayd ibn
(1) Abu al-Hasan Taj al-Qurra, a leading Sufi master, died in Safar 563 AH. He is listed in al-Ibar, vol. 4, p. 182.
(2) Hadith no. 622 in the section on zakat: “Zakat on cattle.” Also recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 1803. The narrator Khusayf b. ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Jazari is unreliable, and Abu Ubayda b. ʿAbd Allah did not hear directly from his father. The report is, however, corroborated by a sound chain: al-Aʿmash → Abu Waʾil and Ibrahim → Masruq → Muʿadh b. Jabal, who said: “The Prophet sent me to Yemen and commanded me to take from every thirty cows a tabiʿ or tabiʿah (a one-year-old calf), from every forty a musinnah (a two-year-old cow), and from every adult male (halim) one dinar or its equivalent in maʿafir cloth.” Reported by ʿAbd al-Razzaq (6841); Abu Dawud (1576, 1577); al-Nasaʾi 5/26; Ibn Majah (1803); al-Darimi 1/382; al-Daraqutni 2/102; Ibn al-Jarud (178); al-Bayhaqi 4/98 and 9/193. Al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan, while Ibn Hibban (749) and al-Hakim 1/398—followed by al-Dhahabi—declared it sahih. Al-Darimi 1/382 also transmits it through Abu Bakr b. ʿAyyash → ʿAsim b. Bahdalah → Abu Waʾil → Masruq → Muʿadh, a sound chain. Ahmad, Musnad, 5/247, records it via Sharik → ʿAsim with the same isnad.
