the book of Aḥmad ibn Yūsuf, where al-Marrār states:
“I wrote ḥadith from one thousand shaykhs, yet I have never seen anyone the like of al-Jurjānī. When the ordeal concerning the ‘utterance (lafẓ) of the Qur’an’ arose, al-Jurjānī kept silent, so the people of ḥadith turned against him. I heard my father say: I went with Ṣāliḥ ibn Ḥammūyah, al-Marrār’s brother, and he stopped at al-Jurjānī’s teaching circle and asked, ‘What is your view regarding the utterance of the Qur’an?’
He remained silent until the question was put to him a third time. Then he said, ‘I regard it as a novel innovation (bidʿah), and every bidʿah is misguidance.’
Ṣāliḥ ibn Aḥmad remarked: He was one of the scholars and jurists—trustworthy and truthful.
It was said that he engaged in debate with Abū ʿUbayd.
He died in 257 AH; another report says 256 AH. He left behind eminent descendants who are held in esteem in Hamadhān. ﵀
