satisfied, and he still refused to transmit anything to me.’
I say: We seek refuge in Allah from such behaviour. Abū Saʿīd ibn Yūnus spoke truly when he said,
‘He suffered from no blemish other than arrogance; and if a man’s reliability were impugned on that account, it would indeed be a grave sin.’
It was related to us by Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Muʾayyad; al-Mubārak ibn Abī al-Jūd told us; Aḥmad ibn Abī Ghālib the ascetic told us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAlī told us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Mukhalliṣ told us; Abū Bakr ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; Abū Jaʿfar Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Miṣrī narrated to us; Ibn Abī Fudayk narrated to us; Ibn Abī Dhīʾb narrated to me, from al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
‘I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I hear many of your sayings but I forget them.”
He replied, “Spread out your cloak.”
So I spread it, and he scooped (with his hand) into it and then said, “Fold it in.”
I folded it in, and thereafter I never forgot a single hadith.’
Al-Bukhārī recorded it (1) through a trustworthy narrator from Ibn Abī Fudayk.
Through this same chain: Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; Ibn Abī Fudayk narrated to us; he said: Ibn Abī Dhīʾb informed me, from Shuraḥbīl, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘For a man to give a single dirham in charity during his lifetime is better than his giving one hundred dinars when death approaches.’
Abū Dāwūd also brought it out (2) from the narration of Aḥmad, and our chain to it is higher.
