He died in 242 AH. At the time people thought he was in his seventies—no, rather he was sixty years old, short by twenty days. His son said, “I heard him state this an hour before his death.”
58 – al-Haytham ibn Sahl al-Tustari *
An aged shaykh, long-lived, with elevated isnads, and a hadith transmitter whose reliability was considered lenient.
He narrated from: Ḥammād ibn Zayd, ʿAbthar ibn al-Qāsim, Abū ʿAwānah, ʿAlī ibn Mushir (1), al-Musayyab ibn Sharīk, and a number of others.
He also heard from: Sulaym ibn ʿUqbah al-Baqqār (2) and from Ḥarb Yām (3), both of whom were companions of Anas. He settled in Baghdad.
Those who transmitted from him include: Jaʿfar ibn Ḥamdān—the father of al-Qaṭīʿī—ʿAlī ibn Ḥammād, Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Zayyāt, Abū Saʿīd ibn al-Aʿrābī, and others.
Al-Dāraqutnī graded him weak (4).
ʿAbd al-Ghanī ibn Saʿīd, the ḥāfiẓ, said: “The judge Ismāʿīl crossed out a hadith of al-Haytham ibn Sahl narrated from Ḥammād ibn Zayd and declared it rejected” (5).
