Al-Barqānī said, “He is trustworthy; al-Dāraqutnī instructed me to record his ḥadith in the Ṣaḥīḥ.” (1)
Al-Nasāʾī, on the other hand, ruled him “weak.” (2)
Abū ʿAmr al-Dānī stated, “He learned Qurʾānic recitation from several teachers, yet what he transmits from them contains many irregular variants.” (3)
I (the author) add: he received the variant readings from al-Kisāʾī, Ḥusayn al-Juʿfī, Yaḥyā ibn Ādam, and Abū Yūsuf al-Aʿshā.
He also collected certain readings from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, for he listened to an entire khatma from Abū Bakr according to the recitation of al-Aʿshā.
Among those who transmitted the Qurʾān from him were: Mūsā ibn Isḥāq the judge, ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Quṭʿī, Aḥmad ibn Saʿīd al-Marwazī, Qāsim ibn Dāwūd, ʿUthmān ibn Khurrāzādh, ʿAlī ibn Qirbah, and others.
He was not known for refining or perfecting his transmissions.
Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sarrāj said, “He died in Shaʿbān of the year 248 AH.”
Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr ibn Biṭṭīkh, Aḥmad ibn Muʾmin, and ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Aḥmad told us:
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Najm the preacher narrated to us; Fakhr al-Nisāʾ Shahdah (4) informed us; Ibn Ṭalḥah al-Niʿālī related to us
