Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

in Mecca, where he remained for three nights; that was the last day stipulated in the pact. When dawn broke on the fourth day, Suhayl ibn ʿAmr and others came to him, and Hutayb ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzza cried out, “We appeal to you by Allah and by the treaty: leave our land, for the three days have passed!”

Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah retorted, “You lie—may you lose your mother! This is neither your land nor your fathers’ land. By Allah, we will not leave!”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then summoned Suhayl and Hutayb and said, “I have married a woman from among you. What harm is there if I stay until I consummate the marriage? We could prepare food: we would eat and you could eat with us.”

They answered, “We implore you by Allah and by the treaty—depart from us.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Abū Rāfiʿ to announce the departure. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then mounted and rode until he halted in the valley of Sarf, and the Muslims halted with him. He left Abū Rāfiʿ behind to bring Maymūnah to him at nightfall. He remained at Sarf until she arrived—she had suffered hardship and abuse from some foolish youths of Quraysh—whereupon he consummated the marriage with her. He then travelled on by night and continued until he reached Madinah. Allah—exalted is He—decreed that Maymūnah would later die at Sarf.

Falyḥ related from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for ʿumrah, but the unbelievers of Quraysh blocked his way to the House. He therefore sacrificed his offering and shaved his head at al-Ḥudaybiyah, and he negotiated with them that he would perform the ʿumrah the following year, carrying no weapons except swords and staying only as long as they allowed. The next year he performed the ʿumrah, entering Mecca exactly as he had agreed with them; after he had stayed three days they ordered him to depart, and he did so. Al-Bukhārī recorded this report.

Al-Wāqidī said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nāfiʿ narrated to us from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said, “That ʿumrah was not a make-up (qadāʾ); rather, it was a condition imposed on the Muslims that they would perform the ʿumrah the following year, in the very month in which the idolaters had barred them.”
