Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

—volumes, and I began narrating when I was eighteen years old. (1)

Ahmad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-‘Ijli said, “He is reliable, possesses a great many hadiths, and he was a weaver by trade. (2)”

Abu Hatim al-Razi said, “Trustworthy. (3)”

Ibn Khuzaymah said, “I heard Bundar say, ‘I never took my seat in this gathering until I had already memorised everything I intended to dictate.’ (4)”

Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Qazzaz said, “We were with Bundar when, while relating a hadith from ‘A’ishah, he said: ‘She said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ….’ A man there, making fun of him, remarked, ‘I seek refuge in Allah—how eloquent you are!’ Bundar replied, ‘Whenever we left the company of Rawh, we would go in to Abu ‘Ubaydah, and he would say, “That is now evident in your speech.”’ (5)

I read to ‘Ali ibn Ahmad al-Husayni, who informed us: Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qati‘i; who informed us: Muhammad ibn ‘Ubayd Allah; who informed us: Abu Nasr al-Zaynabi; who informed us: Abu Tahir al-Mukhlis; who narrated to us: Yahya ibn Muhammad; who narrated to us: Bundar; who narrated to us: Ghundar; who narrated to us: Shu‘bah, from Qatadah, who said: I heard Yunus ibn Jubayr say:

“I heard Ibn ‘Umar say, ‘I divorced my wife once. ‘Umar went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and the Prophet ﷺ said, “Let him take her back; then, when she becomes pure, if he wishes, he may divorce her.”’

I said to Ibn ‘Umar, ‘Did you count that divorce against yourself?’ He replied, ‘Enough! What if I were unable (to restrain myself)?’

It was recorded by Muslim (6) through the transmission of Bundar.
