Al-Musallam ibn ʿAllān—and others, with authorization—narrated to us. They said:
al-Kindī narrated to us; al-Qazzāz (1) narrated to us; al-Khaṭīb narrated to us; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUthmān the preacher narrated to us; Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥakam al-Wāsitī narrated to us; I heard Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd say:
“When the Caliph al-Mustaʿīn billāh summoned Naṣr ibn ʿAlī, intending to appoint him to the judgeship, ʿAbd al-Malik, the governor of Basra, also summoned him and ordered him to comply. Naṣr replied, ‘Let me return home and perform istikhāra, seeking Allah’s guidance.’
He went back to his house at midday, prayed two rakʿahs, and said, ‘O Allah, if there is any good for me with You, then take my soul.’ He lay down to sleep; when they came to wake him, he was already dead (2).”
Al-Sarrāj and several others stated that he died in the year 250 AH. Al-Bukhārī added, “in the month of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir.” Al-Sarrāj further said, “I saw him with white hair and beard—he never used dye. I saw him in Baghdad, but he did not narrate anything to us.”
I say: As for his trustworthy grandfather:
48 – Naṣr ibn ʿAlī al-Jahḍamī al-Kabīr*
He transmitted from his maternal grandfather Ashʿath ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Huddānī, from al-Naḍr ibn Shaybān, and from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ghālib al-Huddānī.
