The Expedition of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥudhāfah ibn Qays ibn ʿAdī al-Sahmī

Ibn Jurayj said: “O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you” (Qur’an 4:59) was revealed concerning ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥudhāfah al-Sahmī when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched him at the head of a detachment. Yaʿlā ibn Muslim related this to me from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās. Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim record it in their Ṣaḥīḥ.

Al-Aʿmash narrated from Saʿd ibn ʿUbaydah, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib:

“The Prophet ﷺ appointed a man from the Anṣār as commander of a detachment and ordered them to obey him. They angered him about something, so he said, ‘Gather firewood for me.’ They did so, and he ordered that it be lit. When it blazed he said, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not command you to listen to me and obey?’ They replied, ‘Indeed he did.’ He said, ‘Then enter the fire.’ They looked at one another and said, ‘We fled to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ only to escape the Fire.’ His anger subsided and the fire went out. When they returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ they told him what had happened. He said, ‘Had they entered it, they would never have come out again. Obedience is only in what is right.’” Both Imams include this ḥadīth in their Ṣaḥīḥ.

In that year also occurred the campaign of Dhāt al-Riqāʿ, which we earlier placed in year four and about which we cited the differing views. It is therefore possible that there were two separate campaigns. Allah knows best.
