—al-Warrāq related: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muṣaffā narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ḥamzah narrated to us; Thawr ibn Yazīd told me, from Ḥabīb ibn ʿUbayd, from ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd, who said:
I was sitting when a bedouin came and said, “Messenger of Allah, I hear you mention a tree in Paradise, yet I know of no tree more full of thorns than it”—meaning the ṭalḥ tree. He replied, “Allah will replace every thorn on it with a fruit the size of a castrated billy-goat’s testicle. Inside it are seventy varieties of food, each color unlike the others.” (1)
This is a fair (ḥasan), singular (gharīb) hadith.
28 – al-ʿAdanī, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Abī ʿUmar (M, T, Q, S)
The Imām, ḥadith scholar, ḥāfiẓ, and Shaykh of the Sacred Precinct, Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Abī ʿUmar al-ʿAdanī.
He transmitted hadith from: Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ, Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad, Muʿtamar ibn Sulaymān, Saʿīd ibn Sālim, Wakīʿ ibn al-Jarāḥ, Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah, and many others.
He also compiled a Musnad.
(1) Ibn Kathir records the report (4/288) through Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Dawud, from Abd Allah, from Muhammad ibn Musaffa with this same chain. After citing it, al-Haythami comments in Majma al-Zawaid (10/414): “It was transmitted by al-Tabarani (17/130) and all its narrators are those found in the Sahih.” Al-Suyuti also quotes it in ad-Durr al-Manthur, attributing it to Ibn Abi Dawud in al-Baʿth, to al-Tabarani, to Abu Nuʿaym in Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ (6/103), and to Ibn Mardawayh. In these sources, as in the Majma, the name ʿUtba has been erroneously written as ʿUqba.
ʿUtba b. Abd, whose kunyah was Abu al-Walid, was originally called ʿUtla; the Prophet renamed him ʿUtba. Biographical notices on him appear in Asad al-Ghaba (3/563) and in al-Isaba (2/454).
