—the Baghdadi, author of many works.
He heard hadith from Isḥāq al-Azraq, Maʿn ibn ʿĪsā, Yazīd ibn Hārūn, and Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm.
He pursued legal study with al-Shāfiʿī.
Among those who narrated from him are ʿUbayd ibn Muḥammad al-Bazzāz and Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī Fustuqah.
He was an ocean of knowledge—intelligent, sharp-witted, articulate, and eloquent.
His works on both the ancillary rulings and the fundamentals testify to his vast learning; yet a quarrel arose between him and Imām Aḥmad, so he was boycotted for that (1). He was the first to broach the issue of utterance (lafẓ), and when news reached Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn that he was speaking about

The nisba “al-Karabisi” is pronounced with an open kāf and rāʾ; after the alif comes a medial bāʾ with a kasra, followed by a silent yāʾ, and finally a sīn. It refers to karābis, heavy cloth garments; the singular is kirbās, with a kasra on the kāf. The word is a Persian loan-term. Abū ʿAlī sold such cloth, hence the nickname (Wafayat al-Aʿyan, 2/133).
(1) Al-Hafiz Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr writes in al-Intiqāʾ, p. 106, in the biography of al-Karabisi: “After praising his knowledge, precision, and writings, he notes that there was a close friendship between him and Ahmad ibn Hanbal. When al-Karabisi took a different position on the Qurʾan, that friendship turned into enmity; each began criticizing the other. Ahmad ibn Hanbal used to say: ‘Whoever claims that the Qurʾan is created is a Jahmi; whoever says, “The Qurʾan is the speech of God” but does not add “uncreated,” is a Wāqifi; and whoever says, “My pronunciation of the Qurʾan is created,” is an innovator.’
Al-Karabisi, ʿAbd Allah ibn Kullab, Abū Thawr, Dāwud ibn ʿAlī, al-Bukhārī, al-Harith ibn Asad al-Muhasibi, Muhammad ibn Nasr al-Marwazi, and their contemporaries maintained that the Qurʾan with which God spoke is one of His attributes and therefore not subject to creation, whereas the reciter’s act of recitation and articulation is a human acquisition and thus created. They held that the spoken words are only a report (hikāya) of God’s speech and not the very Qurʾan with which God spoke, likening it to a verbal expression of praise.”
