The Imām, exemplar, saintly devotee and hadith scholar, Abū ʿAbd al-Malik al-Qāsim ibn ʿUthmān al-ʿAbdī of Damascus—the shaykh of the Sufis and the companion of Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Ḥawārī—was better known as al-Jūʿī⦗1⦘ (“the Hungry”).
He kept company with Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī.
He heard hadith from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, al-Walīd ibn Muslim, Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn al-ʿAmrī, Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Aswad, and others.
Among those who narrated from him are Abū Ḥātim, Jaʿfar ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿĀṣim, Aḥmad ibn Anas, Ibrāhīm ibn Duḥaym, Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāʾūd, Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Ḥalabī, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Qutaybah, and many more.

Al-ʿUqaylī remarked: “Al-Jūʿī is the sole transmitter of the report related by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nāfiʿ, from Mālik, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, traced back to the Prophet: ‘Between my grave and my pulpit is a garden from…’”
