Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

nor does he occupy the station of those who read hadith aloud to their assemblies. I say: Rather, he is an unquestionable authority. He died in the month of Ṣafar, 240 AH.

As for:

20 – Ibrāhīm ibn Khālid al-Marwazī al-Jurmayhinī*
A hadith memoriser, nicknamed al-Buṭayṭī; he was a scholar of hadith and died young, in 250 AH. Concerning him Bundar used to say, “The world’s great memorisers of hadith are four, all of them my lads: Ibrāhīm ibn Khālid al-Jurmayhinī, Abū Zurʿah, al-Bukhārī, and ʿAbd Allāh al-Dārimī.”

And as for:

Al-Subki commented on this, saying: “This is an exaggeration on the part of Abu Hatim. Engaging in personal reasoning (ra’y) is not grounds for disparagement, so Abu Hatim’s statement merits no attention. Abu Thawr’s standing is too evident to require authentication; we have already quoted Ahmad ibn Hanbal on him, and that suffices as an honour.” He adds on the following page that Abu Hatim’s phrase “mahall al-masmi‘in” is probably a scribal error and that the correct wording is “mahall al-mutasi‘in,” that is, the prolific narrators, for Abu Thawr was not as abundant in hadith transmission as other huffaz. I have seen the word written in this form by some contemporary hadith scholars when citing Abu Hatim. There is no doubt that jurisprudence predominated for him over hadith. Tadhhib al-Tahdhib 1/119 likewise reads “mahall al-mutasi‘in,” and the same appears in Tabaqat al-Shafi‘iyyah 2/75. Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim said: “He was the jurist and mufti of the people of Baghdad in his day, and one of the eminent, meticulous hadith scholars.” Abu Umar ibn Abd al-Barr said: “He exercised sound judgement and was trustworthy in what he transmitted, although he had a few positions in which he departed from the majority; nonetheless, he was counted among the jurists.” Tadhhib al-Tahdhib 1/119 also reports that Maslama ibn Qasim al-Andalusi said: “He is a trustworthy, eminent jurist.” References: al-Jarh wa-l-Ta‘dil 2/97; al-Ansab 3/232; al-Lubab 1/273.
