Hushaym reported: Husayn ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman told us, saying, “Abu Zibyan narrated to us: I heard Usamah ibn Zayd relate:
‘We marched against al-Hurqah of Juhaynah. We struck the people at daybreak and put them to flight. I, together with a man from the Ansar, pursued one of them. When we closed in on him he cried out, “There is no god but Allah.” The Ansari held back, but I thrust my spear into him and killed him.
When we returned, news of this reached the Prophet ﷺ. He said, “Did you kill him after he said, ‘There is no god but Allah’?”—and he repeated it three times. I replied, “Messenger of Allah, he only said it as a shield.” He kept repeating the question until I wished I had not embraced Islam before that day.’ Agreed upon.
Muhammad ibn Salamah, on the authority of Ibn Ishaq, said: Yaʿqub ibn ʿUtbah related to me from Muslim ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Juhani, from Jundub ibn Makith al-Juhani, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched Ghalib ibn ʿAbd Allah to raid the Banu al-Malluḥ at al-Kidid, and I was in his detachment. We continued until, when we reached Qudayd, we encountered al-Harith ibn Malik ibn al-Barsaʾ al-Laythi and seized him. He said, “I have only come to embrace Islam.”
Ghalib replied, “If you have truly come to embrace Islam, a day and a night in bonds will not harm you. But if your purpose is otherwise, we must make certain of you.” He then bound him securely and left over him a small dark-skinned guard, saying, “Stay with him until we pass by; if he attempts to escape, strike off his head.”
We went on to the valley of al-Kidid and camped there after ʿasr. My companions then sent me back to check on him. I climbed a hill that overlooked the settlement and lay flat upon it; this was before sunset. A man came out, looked around, and, seeing me stretched out on the hill, said to his wife, “I notice a dark shape on that hill that I did not see earlier today. Look and make sure the dogs have not dragged off any of your containers.” She looked and said, “By Allah, I am missing nothing…'
