Al-Ḥārith passed away with three days remaining in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 250 AH.
I read to Ibn ʿAsākir, who transmitted from Abū Rūḥ, who said: Tamīm informed us; Abū Saʿd informed us; Ibn Ḥamdān informed us; Abū Yaʿlā informed us; al-Ḥārith ibn Miskīn narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; Hishām ibn Saʿd informed us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from ʿUmar, who reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
“Moses said, ‘Are you Adam—the one into whom Allah breathed of His spirit, before whom He made His angels bow in prostration, and to whom He taught all the names?’
Adam replied, ‘Yes.’
Moses said, ‘What made you bring us and yourself out of Paradise?’
Adam asked, ‘Who are you?’
He answered, ‘I am Moses.’
Adam said, ‘So you are Moses of the Children of Israel, the one to whom Allah spoke from behind a veil, placing no messenger between you and Him?’
He replied, ‘Yes.’
Adam said, ‘Then do you reproach me for a matter that Allah had decreed for me before I was created?’”
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then said, “So Adam prevailed over Moses in the argument.” (1)
