Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Among those who likewise narrated from him were al-Bukhārī in his History, Muḍar al-Asadī, al-Ḥasan ibn al-Habbāb, and Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāʿid.

A great many people recited the Qur’an to him, including Abū Rabīʿah Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, Isḥāq al-Khuzāʿī, Aḥmad ibn Farah, Ibn al-Habbāb, al-Lahbiyānī (1), and others besides.

Al-Ḥākim declared the hadith on the takbīr (2) that he transmitted to be authentic, yet it is in fact munkar.

Abū Ḥātim said, “He is weak in hadith; I do not relate anything from him.” (3)

Al-ʿUqaylī stated, “His reports are munkar; he joins together disconnected narrations. We have set out his biography at length in al-Ṭabaqāt (4).”

He died in 250 AH.

He was devout, learned, and firmly committed to the Sunnah—may Allah have mercy on him.

(1) They are: Abdullah ibn Ali, Abu Abd al-Rahman, and Muhammad ibn Abdullah, Abu Jaafar. (2) Al-Hakim recorded it in al-Mustadrak, 3/304, through Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Qasim ibn Abi Bazza, who said: “I heard Ikrima ibn Sulayman say: I recited to Ismail ibn Abdullah Qustantinin. When I reached ‘By the morning brightness’ (al-Duha), he told me: ‘Say the takbir at the close of every surah until you finish.’ He related that Abdullah ibn Kathir had recited to Mujahid, who instructed him likewise; Mujahid related that Ibn Abbas had instructed him; Ibn Abbas related that Ubayy ibn Kab had instructed him; and Ubayy related that the Prophet ﷺ had ordered it.” Al-Hakim commented: “This chain is authentic, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not include it.” Al-Dhahabi responded: “Al-Bazzi has been criticized.” Ibn Kathir cited the report in his Tafsir, 4/531, adding: “This practice is reported solely through Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Bazzi, a specialist in Quranic recitation. As for hadith, Abu Hatim al-Razi declared him weak and said, ‘I do not narrate from him,’ and Abu Jaafar al-Uqayli likewise said, ‘His hadith is objectionable.’ ” (3) Al-Jarh wa al-Tadil, vol. 2, p. 71.
