The expedition led by Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to Najd
It took place after Khaybar, in the seventh year AH.
ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār reported: I was told by Iyās ibn Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ, from his father, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched Abu Bakr to the clan of Fazārah, and I accompanied him. When we drew close to their watering-place, Abu Bakr had us bivouac for a while. After we had performed the dawn prayer he ordered us to launch the raid, so we struck and reached the water. Abu Bakr killed those whom he killed while we fought alongside him.
I then saw a group of people that included women and children. Fearing they would reach the mountain before me, I caught up with them and loosed an arrow. When they saw it they halted, and I found a woman clad in a leather cloak with her daughter—one of the most beautiful of the Arabs. I drove them back to Abu Bakr, and he awarded me the daughter as my allotted share of the spoils. I did not so much as lift her garment until we arrived in Madinah; she spent the night with me there and still I did not lift her garment.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ later met me in the market and said, “O Salamah, give me the woman as a gift.” I replied, “O Prophet of Allah, by Allah, she has pleased me, and I have not lifted her garment.” He kept silent until the next day and then said, “O Salamah, give me the woman—may your father be ransomed for Allah’s sake.” I said, “She is yours, O Messenger of Allah.”
The Prophet ﷺ then sent her to the people of Mecca and, through her, ransomed several Muslim captives. Muslim recorded this report.
It is also said that the episode took place in Shaʿbān.
