I cried “Allāhu akbar,” pronounced the tahlīl, and grew alarmed, while Yaḥyā kept laughing (1). Then, with a fluent tongue, he declaimed:
I am the crow, Abū ʿAjwah;
I am the cub of the lion and lioness.
I cherish wine and sweet basil,
rapture and the cup.
So let no one fear my revelry,
nor dread the force of my assault. (2)
He then said, “Old man, recite for me some love-poetry.” So I recited:
Has it beguiled you that you sinned—and sins kept piling up—
while I never left you, only then to repent?
= The zaygh: a small black crow; at times its beak and legs are tinged red. It is also called the olive crow because it feeds on olives. Graceful in shape and pleasant in appearance, it is about the size of a pigeon, with a greyish head shading toward white, and it does not eat carrion. Plural: zayghan.
(1) Al-Nujum al-zahira 2/316; al-Damiri, Hayat al-hayawan al-kubra 2/2. After the words “and Yahya laughed,” the latter continues: “I asked him, ‘What is this, may Allah set you right?’ He replied, ‘Ask him about himself.’ So I said to him, ‘Who are you?’ He rose and recited in eloquent Arabic …” — the verses.
(2) The verses are also found in Al-Nujum al-zahira 2/317 and Hayat al-hayawan al-kubra 2/2, where the first hemistich of the third line reads: “So fear no contagion that my hand might transmit.” They are followed by these additional lines:
“I possess things you will seek
on the day of wedding and convivial feast.
Among them a swelling on my back
that no fur cloak is able to hide;
and as for the other swelling,
if only it had a handle,
no one among the people
would doubt that it is a water-bag.”
According to Hayat al-hayawan al-kubra, Abu Tahir al-Silafi transmitted the story through a different chain: Musa al-Rida related that Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali ibn Muhammad said, “I entered upon Ahmad ibn Abi Duad; at his right was a book chest …” — the incident. The verses there read:
“I am the jackdaw, Abu ‘Ajwah,
companion of wine and coffee.
Certain traits of mine are undeniable
on a day of revelry and invitation:
Among them a swelling on my back
that no fur cloak can conceal,
and a swelling on my chest; had it a strap,
everyone would certainly believe it a saddle-bag.”
