and he—may Allah have mercy on him—was a man devoted to the Sunnah and true adherence.
Al-Baghawī said: “He died in Sāmarrāʾ in the year 257 AH.” Another report states that he passed away when four days remained of Dhū al-Ḥijjah of that same year. A third opinion says 258 AH, but this is a mistake.
Musallam ibn Muḥammad and Muʾammal ibn Muḥammad informed us, saying:
“Zayd ibn al-Ḥasan informed us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad informed us; Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb informed us; Abū Bakr al-Barqānī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar al-Muʿaddal for Egypt informed us; Ḥamzah ibn Muḥammad al-Kinanī informed us; Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī informed us; Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā informed me; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah narrated to us; al-Mubārak ibn Saʿīd, from Mūsā al-Juhanī, from Muṣʿab ibn Saʿd, from Saʿd, reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘What prevents any one of you from glorifying Allah ten times, magnifying Him ten times, and praising Him ten times after every prayer? In the course of the five prayers that is one hundred and fifty utterances on the tongue and one thousand five hundred on the scale. And when he lies down to sleep, let him say subḥānallāh (glory be to Allah) thirty-three times, al-ḥamdu lillāh (praise be to Allah) thirty-three times, and allāhu akbar (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-four times; that is one hundred on the tongue and one thousand on the scale. So which of you commits two thousand five hundred sins in a single day and night (1)?!’
I was also given this hadith with a chain four grades higher: Aḥmad ibn Salāmah and others, from Ibn Kulayb; ʿAlī ibn Bayān informed us; Ibn Makhlad narrated to us; Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār informed us; and al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah narrated something similar.
