(1) The author—may Allah have mercy on him—quotes forty verses of this poem in volume 14, biography no. 288; it opens with: ya hur faraktana wa lam taʿud, wa kunta ʿindi bimanzilat al-walad; wa kayfa nanfakku ʿan hawaka wa qad, kunta lana ʿuddatan min al-ʿadad – “O Hurr, you left us and never returned, and you were to me like a son; how could we detach ourselves from loving you when you were our sure support among all supports?” (2) Pronounced with an open nūn and a doubled fāʾ, followed by a hāʾ (nuffāḥ); originally from Samarra, he later settled in Egypt, where he died in 314 AH. See his biography in al-Lubab, 1/319. (3) Pronounced with ḍamma on the mīm, fatḥa on the nūn, and a doubled qāf with kasra (munnəqq), a term applied to someone who picks over or cleans food. (4) He is the blind Farghani of Damascus. Al-Samʿani states in al-Ansab, fol. 424a: “I think his lineage goes back to Farghana, beyond the river.” This Hajib was a prolific hadith scholar, lived in Damascus, and died there.
