Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

as for 145 – the younger “Imam’s Nephew,” ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUbayd Allah al-Hāshimī *

He is the ḥadith transmitter, truthful and duly accredited: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Faḍl al-Hāshimī, an ʿAbbāsid from Aleppo.

He narrated from the subject of the preceding entry, and from Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd al-Jawharī, Muḥammad ibn Qudāmah al-Maṣṣīṣī, Barakah ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥalabī, Ḥājib ibn Sulaymān, Aḥmad ibn Ḥarb al-Ṭāʾī, and several others.

Reporting from him were Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān al-Rabaʿī, Abū Bakr ibn al-Muqriʾ, the judge ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Ḥalabī, and many more.

His kunya was Abū Muḥammad; some said Abū al-Qāsim.

He lived past the year 310 AH, and I see no reason to critique him.

The ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir mentions him in his History, noting that he narrated in Damascus; he did not mention the elder nephew, for that lies outside the scope of his book.

146 – Muḥammad ibn Karrām al-Sijistānī, the innovator **

Leader of the Karrāmiyyah. He was ascetic, devout, pious, widely renowned, and surrounded by many followers; yet, as Ibn Ḥibbān observed, he transmitted feeble reports.

He was left to himself until he gathered the vilest opinions from the legal schools and the frailest narrations from the hadith corpus. Thereafter he kept company with al-Juwaybarī and Ibn Tamīm—two men who may well have fabricated one hundred thousand ḥadiths—and he adopted
