al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān said: I heard ʿAlī ibn Ḥujr recite:
Our fixed allotment is one hundred for the travelling seeker
every day—besides whatever else he may receive;

He also recited on another occasion—after they had asked him to increase the number:
Each day I count out a hundred for you,
hadith by hadith; I shall not add a single letter.
If any report among them runs long,

If you are content, then listen to them straightaway;
otherwise, go and bring someone who will narrate you a thousand.
Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Daghūlī said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar ibn Khāqān narrated to us:

such things are surely among weighty matters.
My effort would be for naught were I to sell my honour
after ninety pilgrimages for mere trifles.
Through patience and forbearance toward my brothers
I hope to attain the Abode of Peace.
What you have proposed belittles a man like me
in the eyes of people of intellect and insight.
Al-Bukhārī said: ʿAlī ibn Ḥujr died in Jumādā al-Ūlā, the year 244 AH.
