137 – Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd ibn Ḥayyān al-Rāzī (D, T, Q)
The learned authority and eminent ḥāfiẓ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Rāzī.
He was born around 160 AH.
He related ḥadith from: Yaʿqūb al-Qummī—his most senior teacher—, Ibn al-Mubārak, Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā, Ḥakkām ibn Salm, Zāfir ibn Sulaymān, Nuʿaym ibn Maysarah, Salamah ibn al-Faḍl al-Abrash, and many others of the same rank.
For all his prominence, his narrations are deemed objectionable, and he was known for peculiarities.
Those who transmitted from him include: Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, al-Qazwīnī in their compilations, Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, Abū Zurʿah, Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā, Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad Jazrah, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-Maʿmarī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, Muḥammad ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī, Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Baghandī, Muḥammad ibn Hārūn al-Rūyānī, and a large number of others.
Abd al-Malik asked, “Did you really hear her say that?” He replied, “Yes.” Abd al-Malik then tapped the ground for a while with his staff and said, “I wish I had left the matter alone and not interfered.”
Muslim also transmits—through the isnad of Abu Qazzaʿa—that while Abd al-Malik b. Marwan was circumambulating the Kaʿba he remarked, “May Allah fight Ibn al-Zubayr! He lies against the Mother of the Believers, claiming he heard her say that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Aisha, were it not that your people have only recently abandoned disbelief, I would dismantle the House so that I could add to it from the Hijr, for your people made the building too small.’” Al-Harith b. Abd Allah b. Abi Rabiʿa responded, “Do not say that, Commander of the Believers, for I myself heard the Mother of the Believers relate this.” Abd al-Malik then said, “Had I heard this before I demolished it, I would have left it as Ibn al-Zubayr had built it.”
