Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Allāh, al-Walīd ibn Abī Thawr, Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd, ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Sulaymān, Hushaym ibn Bashīr, Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Qannād, Baqiyyah, Ibn ʿUyaynah, and many others.

He was extensively travelled and possessed transmissions with very high chains.

Those who related from him include Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī in their Sunan collections. Al-Nasāʾī also transmitted—through an unnamed intermediary—from him and said, “He is reliable.”

Others who heard from him were Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī, Ibn Ṣāʿid, Ibn Abī Dāʾūd, Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ḥazawwarī, Muḥammad ibn Shādhil al-Naysābūrī, Aḥmad ibn al-Qāsim (the brother of Abū al-Layth al-Farāʾiḍī), Abū ʿĪsā Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Gharrād, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Mandah, and many others.

He taught on the frontier, in Baghdad, and in Isfahān; he lived to a great age and had narrations that were unique to him.

Muḥammad ibn al-Qāsim al-Azdī relates that Luwayn said, “My mother gave me the nickname Luwayn, and I am content with it.” Al-Khaṭīb and others add that he used to sell riding animals; when advertising a horse he would say, “This mount has a luwayn,” and the nickname stuck.

Aḥmad ibn al-Qāsim ibn Naṣr reports: “Luwayn narrated to us in the year 240 AH. My father asked him, ‘How old are you now?’ He replied, ‘One hundred and thirteen years.’”

I (the author) say: On that reckoning he could have heard directly from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, Ibn ʿAwn, and the remaining Tābiʿūn. Perhaps, however, he only began attending sittings when he was already an older man nearing middle age—Allah knows best.

We have been informed that, after becoming angry with his children, he left al-Maṣṣīṣa, settled in Adana, and died there in 245 AH; some say in 246 AH.

Al-Baghawī states: When Luwayn arrived in Baghdad, one hundred thousand people gathered in his session.
