—Salamah, so I brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who breathed upon it three times, and I have never felt any pain from it to this very hour.
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim narrated—from his father, from Sahl—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ confronted the idolaters in one of his expeditions and the two sides fought. Each contingent withdrew to its own camp, while one man among the Muslims spared neither great nor small of the enemy; he pursued every last one of them, striking them with his sword. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Indeed, he is one of the people of the Fire.” They exclaimed, “Who among us could be destined for Paradise if this man is from the Fire?” One of them said, “By Allah, he will never die in the state you see him in.” He followed the man until the latter was wounded; when his wounds grew severe and he hastened death, he set his sword upright on the ground with its point between his breasts, leaned upon it, and killed himself. The observer came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “I testify that you are truly the Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet asked, “What makes you say that?” He recounted the incident, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, “A person may perform the deeds of the people of Paradise in the eyes of men, yet he is one of the people of the Fire; and a person may perform the deeds of the people of the Fire in the eyes of men, yet he is one of the people of Paradise.” Agreed upon.
Al-Bukhārī also transmitted—through Shuʿayb ibn Abī Ḥamzah, from al-Zuhrī, from Ibn al-Musayyib, from Abū Hurayrah—who said: “We were present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Khaybar. The Prophet pointed to a man and said, ‘This one is among the people of the Fire.’ When the fighting began, the man fought fiercely.” He then related the story in wording similar to the report of Sahl ibn Saʿd.
Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān and others narrated—from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ḥabbān, from Abū ʿAmrah, from Zayd ibn Khālid al-Juhanī—that a man died on the day of Khaybar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of him and said, “Offer the funeral prayer for your companion.” Their faces changed, so he added, “Your companion misappropriated spoils in the path of Allah.” We searched his belongings and found
