He also cited Malik ibn Anas, yet no actual transmission from Malik is preserved through him.

Those who narrated from him include Muslim, Ibn Majah, al-Hasan ibn Sufyan, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Qutaybah, ʿAli ibn Ahmad ʿAllan, Ahmad ibn ʿAbd al-Warith al-ʿAssal, Muhammad ibn Zabban, and many others besides them.

He was renowned for exceptional accuracy and memorization, and he never travelled abroad for knowledge.

Al-Nasaʾi said, “Ibn Rumh never erred in a single hadith.”

Abu Saʿid ibn Yunus said, “He is trustworthy, firmly reliable; he was the most knowledgeable person regarding the reports of our land.”

He passed away in Shawwal, 242 AH.

Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Nasaʾi also remarked, “Had he written directly from Malik, I would have placed him in Malik’s first tier of disciples—meaning on account of his memorization and precision.”

I (the author) say: It so happened that I did not include Ibn Rumh in my book Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, so I have mentioned him here because of his standing.

I am amazed that al-Bukhari did not transmit from him. He was certainly worthy of that—indeed, he was more precise than Qutaybah ibn Saʿid. May Allah have mercy on them both.

Ahmad ibn Hibat Allah informed us, through Zaynab al-Shaʿriyya and al-Muʾayyad ibn Muhammad, who said:

Umm al-Khayr Fatimah bint ʿAli ibn Mazhar ibn Zaʿbal related to us in the year 531 AH; ʿAbd al-Ghafir ibn Muhammad al-Farisi related to us at the beginning of the year 441 AH; Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hamdan related to us; al-Hasan ibn Sufyan the ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Rumh narrated to us; al-Layth ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Saʿid, from Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, from ʿAtaʾ ibn Yazid, from Tamim al-Dari:

From the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “Verily, the religion is sincere counsel.”

They asked, “For whom, O Messenger of Allah?”

He replied, “For Allah, for His Book, for the leaders of the Muslims—or of the believers—and for their common folk.”
