Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

days of Shaʿbān had passed in the year 234 AH, and he was then seventy-four years old—may Allah have mercy on him.

Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad, Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm the grammarian, and a number of others informed us, saying:

“Abū al-Munajjā ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar al-ʿAttābī related to us.” ḥ

Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq al-Hamadhānī likewise informed us, as did Zakariyyā ibn ʿAlī; they said:

ʿAbd al-Awwal ibn ʿĪsā related to us; Bībā bint ʿAbd al-Ṣamad al-Harthamiyya informed us; Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Shurayḥ al-Anṣārī related to us; Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Baghawī related to us; Abū Khaythamah Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb related to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm related to us; Rūḥ ibn al-Qāsim told me, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Maymūna, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would withdraw to an open place to relieve himself, and I would bring him water with which he would cleanse himself.”

Muslim (1) recorded this ḥadīth through Abū Khaythamah, so it appears among the high-level concordant chains.

ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Muḥsin al-Ḥusaynī read this to us; Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn al-Zāghwānī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Zaynabī informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Mukhalliṣ informed us; Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī related to us; Abū Khaythamah Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb, Shujāʿ ibn Makhlad, and al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah related to us; they said:

“Hushaym informed us; Ḥumayd informed us, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Maintain straightness in—’”} }

(1) The isnad is sound. The report appears in Sahih Muslim, no. 271, Book of Purification, chapter “Cleansing oneself with water after defecation.” The verb “yatabarraz” means “to go to al-baraz,” with an open b; al-baraz originally denotes a wide open space and is used euphemistically for answering the call of nature.
