This is the wording preserved by Abū Dāwūd, while al-Bukhārī also cited the report but with the phrase, “coming down from a flock of sheep.”
Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, reporting from al-Zubaydī, from al-Zuhrī, said: ʿAnbasah ibn Saʿīd informed me that he heard Abū Hurayrah relate to Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched Abān in command of a raiding party toward Najd. Abān and his men returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Khaybar after it had been conquered, the girths of their horses plaited with palm-fibre. I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, do not allot them a share.’ Abān retorted, ‘And you, O wabar, who have slid down from the top of a misguided tree!’ The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Abān, sit down,’ and no share was given to them.” Al-Bukhārī records this incident in suspended form, adding, “It is also related from al-Zubaydī.”
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah reports from Ibn Shihāb that the Banū Fazārah had come to aid the people of Khaybar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to them not to assist the Jews and offered them a specified portion of Khaybar’s produce if they would withdraw. They refused. When Allah granted the conquest of Khaybar, those Banū Fazārah who had been there came to the Prophet and said, “Give us the share you promised.” He replied, “Your share—” or he said, “You may have Dhū al-Ruqaybah,” naming a mountain in Khaybar. They answered, “Then we shall fight you.” He said, “Your rendezvous is at Janfāʾ.” On hearing this, they fled. Janfāʾ is a watering place of the Banū Fazārah.
Al-Bukhārī also narrates: Makki ibn Ibrāhīm told us—Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd told us: I saw the mark of a wound on Salamah’s leg and asked, “Abū Muslim, what is this wound?” He replied, “It was inflicted on me on the Day of Khaybar.” The people said, “He was struck—”
