are writing down traditions from Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Arʿarah.’
He exclaimed, ‘Uff! They do not care from whom they take their notes.’
Al-Athram also relates from Aḥmad that he faulted Ibn Arʿarah, and I take this to concern the man’s conduct rather than his accuracy in memorization.
The ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAdī said: ‘Al-Qāsim ibn Ṣafwān al-Bardhaʿī narrated to us, saying: "ʿUthmān ibn Khurrāzādh told us: Among all those I have met, the four whose memories were unrivalled are…," and he counted among them Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Arʿarah.’
Mūsā ibn Hārūn said: ‘He died with seven days left of Ramaḍān, in the year 231 AH.’
Abū Bakr al-Athram reported: ‘I said to Abū ʿAbd Allāh [Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal], “Do you preserve anything from Ibn ʿAbbās stating that the Messenger of Allah used to visit the House every night?”
He replied, “They copied that from the notebook of Muʿādh; they never heard it from him.”
I said, “Ibrāhīm ibn Arʿarah claims he heard it.”
Abū ʿAbd Allāh’s face changed colour; he shook his hand and said, “Lies and fabrication! They did not hear it from him,” and he regarded the matter as very serious.
Ibn al-Madīnī said: ‘Qatādah transmitted a singular ḥadīth: Abū Ḥassān al-Aʿraj narrated to us from Ibn ʿAbbās that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit the House every night he remained [in Mecca] (1).
It is uniquely transmitted by Hishām from Qatādah; I copied it from the notebook of Muʿādh ibn Hishām while he was present, yet I did not hear it from him.
Muʿādh said to me, “Bring it so I may read it.” I replied, “Leave it for today.”’
