—he would feed your hungry and admonish your ignorant, whereas we were living in a land—indeed in a place of remoteness and estrangement—in Abyssinia, all of it for Allah and for His Messenger. By Allah, I will neither eat nor drink until I have told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what you have just said. Out there we were harmed and afraid, and I shall put this matter before him and ask him about it.”
When the Prophet ﷺ arrived, she said, “O Prophet of Allah, ʿUmar has said so-and-so.” He replied, “He and his companions have only one emigration, but you—the People of the Ship—have two.”
She continued, “I later saw Abū Mūsā and the rest of the ship’s company coming to me one after another, asking me about this report. Nothing in the whole world delighted them more or loomed larger in their eyes than the words the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had spoken to them.”
Abū Burdah narrated that Asmāʾ said, “I even saw Abū Mūsā repeatedly asking me to recount this ḥadīth, and he would say, ‘You performed hijrah twice: once to the Negus and once to the Prophet.’ ”
Ajlāḥ ibn ʿAbd Allāh reported from al-Shaʿbī that when Jaʿfar returned from Abyssinia, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to meet him, kissed him on the forehead, and said, “By Allah, I do not know which makes me happier: the conquest of Khaybar or the arrival of Jaʿfar.” Some transmit this through Ajlaḥ, from al-Shaʿbī, from Jābir.
Ibn ʿUyaynah said: al-Zuhrī narrated to us—he had heard ʿAnbasah ibn Saʿīd al-Qurashī relate from Abū Hurayrah—who said: I reached Medina while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was at Khaybar after its capture, and I asked him to allot me a share of the booty. One of the sons of Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ spoke up and said, “O Messenger of Allah, do not give him a share.” I said, “This is the man who killed Ibn Qawqal.”
He—apparently the son of Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ—replied, “How astonishing that a mere wabar (a shaggy desert creature) who has come down to us from a misguided people should reproach me for killing a Muslim whom Allah honored through my hand and did not disgrace me through his.”
