Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Narrated from him were al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Ibn Abi al-Dunya, Abu Ya‘la, Ja‘far al-Firyabi, Ahmad ibn Farah—the Qur’an commentator—Musa ibn Harun, Abu Bakr al-Baghandi, Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Sufi al-Saghir, and many others.

He was righteous, ascetic, devoted to worship, much given to fasting and standing in prayer, reserved, and highly esteemed; he would not break his fast unless invited to share food.

He was a master memoriser, an accomplished reciter, and among the most knowledgeable—and the most reliable—of people regarding the hadith of Hushaym.

Salih Jazrah transmitted from him and said, “There was no hadith of Hushaym that passed me but that I had heard it twenty times or more, and I would stop him; I used to listen to him together with Sa‘id al-Jawhari, Ibrahim’s father.”

Salih Jazrah went on to say, “The two most learned people in the hadith of Hushaym are ‘Amr ibn ‘Awn and Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd Allah.”

Yahya ibn Ma‘in said, “Among Hushaym’s companions are Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah al-Dulabi and Ibrahim al-Harawi, and he (Ibrahim) is the shrewder of the two.”

Abu Dawud remarked, “Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd Allah is weak.”

Al-Nasa’i said, “He is not strong.”

I say: He passed away in Ramadan of the year 244 AH, at a little over ninety years of age.
