Aḥmad ibn Abī Khaythama said: Musʿab al-Zubayrī told me, “Isḥāq ibn Abī Isrāʾīl debated with me and declared, ‘I will not utter this formula, nor anything else’—meaning with respect to the Qurʾān. I pressed the discussion further, and he replied, ‘I do not refrain out of doubt; I only keep silent just as those before me kept silent.’ ”
I say: Fairness dictates that a man whose position is like this should retain his integrity as a narrator—Allah knows best.
Al-Bukhārī and several others said that he died in 245 AH. Ibn Qāniʿ specified that it was in Shaʿbān of that year. ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Naḍr maintained that he died in 246 AH, while Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī reported, “He passed away in Sāmarrāʾ, in Shaʿbān, 246 AH.”
I add: Some of his higher-isnād transmissions have reached us.
