the Qur’an reciter, who said: Abū Saʿd the physician informed us; he said: Abū ʿAmr the grammarian informed us; he said: Abū Yaʿlā al-Tamīmī narrated to us; he said: Shabāb al-ʿUsfūrī narrated to us; he said: Muʿtamir narrated to us, saying, “I heard my father relate from Anas, who said:
‘A man used to allocate some of the produce of his palm-grove to the Prophet ﷺ as charity (1) until Qurayẓa and al-Naḍīr were conquered. After that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to return such gifts. My family told me to go to him and request back what they had given, but he had already handed it over to Umm Ayman. She wound her garment around my neck and exclaimed, “No, by Allah! He will not return them to you,” while the Prophet ﷺ was saying to her, “You may have this and that.” I think he added: She kept saying, “No, by Allah!” until he granted her ten times their worth.’
This is a singular hadith, counted among the isolated reports.
Al-Bukhārī included it (2) through the narration of Shabāb.
Among those who passed away in the same year as Shabāb, namely 240 AH, were: Aḥmad ibn Abī Dāwūd the judge; Abū Thawr Ibrāhīm ibn Khālid the jurist; Suwayd ibn Saʿīd; Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd; Suwayd ibn Naṣr; Suhnūn (3) the jurist; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ghiyāth; Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Jarjarāʾī; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿĪsā ibn Mā Sargis; Jaʿfar ibn Ḥumayd al-Kūfī; Muḥammad ibn Khālid al-Ṭaḥḥān; Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr Zunayj; Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAṭṭāb al-Aʿyan; and al-Layth ibn Khālid, the disciple of al-Kisāʾī.
