Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Muʿādh; Wakiʿ; Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān; Fudayl ibn Sulaymān al-Numayrī; Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān; Yazīd ibn Hārūn; and many others besides.

He even narrated from Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb, who was himself regarded as one of the authoritative masters.

Those who transmitted from him include the six canonical compilers in their books, Abū Zurʿah, Abū Ḥātim, Ibn Abī al-Dunyā, ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad, al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Mandah, al-Qāsim al-Muṭarriz, Jaʿfar al-Firyābī, Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāʿid, Muḥammad ibn Jarīr, Abū Rūq Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Bakr al-Hizzānī, and many others.

Abū Ḥātim said: “A Basran, reliable, and keener than ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī. I heard al-ʿAbbās al-ʿAnbarī say, ‘I learned ḥadīth only from ʿAmrū ibn ʿAlī.’”

Al-Ḥajjāj ibn al-Shāʿir remarked, “ʿAmrū ibn ʿAlī did not mind whether he taught from his notebook or from memory.”

Al-Nasāʾī said, “Trustworthy, a ḥāfiẓ, a hadith specialist.” Al-Nasāʾī also narrated from him through Zakariyyā as-Sijzī; his own teacher ʿAffān and the judge al-Maḥāmilī likewise transmitted from him.

Abū Zurʿah described him as “one of the knights of hadith; in Basra we saw no one with a better memory than he, ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, and al-Shādhakūnī.”

Abū Ḥafṣ al-Fallās said, “I once attended the session of Ḥammād ibn Zayd while I was a handsome boy. A man pinched my cheek, so I ran off and never went back.”

The ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ishkāb stated, “I have never seen anyone like Abū Ḥafṣ al-Fallās; he excelled at everything.”

It has reached us that Abū Ḥafṣ said, “I was never a money-changer at all.” He also travelled to Isfahan.
