110 – Sahl ibn ʿUthmān Abū Masʿūd al-ʿAskarī * (M)
The imām, ḥāfiẓ, accomplished master, and firmly reliable authority: Abū Masʿūd al-ʿAskarī.
He heard ḥadith from Ḥammād ibn Zayd, Sharīk the judge, Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abjar, Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ, ʿAlī ibn Mushir, Yaḥyā ibn Abī Zāʾida, Ziyād ibn ʿAbd Allāh, and others of their rank.
Those who related from him include Muslim, ʿUbayd ibn Muḥammad al-Ghazzāl, ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Bisṭām, Jaʿfar ibn Aḥmad ibn Fāris, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad ibn Salm al-Rāzī, ʿAbdān al-Ahwāzī, and many more.
Among his own contemporaries, ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī also transmitted from him.
Abū Shaykh said, “He left Isfahan for Rayy in 232 AH, then returned to Iraq.” He added, “He died at ʿAskar Mukram, and he possessed a wealth of benefits and rare narrations.”
Abū Zurʿa and Abū Ḥātim said, “Trustworthy.”
Ibn Ḥibbān included him in his History of the Trustworthy.
Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim said, “He died in 235 AH.”
I (the author) say: He probably reached eighty years of age, and he was one of the venerable shaykhs of Islam.
In that same year there also died: Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar al-Wakīʿī and Ibrāhīm ibn al-ʿAlāʾ al-Ḥimṣī.
