I say: We possess some of al-Qawārīrī’s higher-dated transmissions in al-Mukhlisiyyāt and in the booklet entitled “The Description of the Hypocrite.”
ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Naḍr al-Azdī and ʿAbd Allāh al-Baghawī both stated that al-Qawārīrī died in 235 AH. Al-Baghawī added: this occurred on Thursday, the twelfth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. Al-Ḥusayn ibn Qahm said: He passed away in Baghdad on a Friday, and a great multitude attended his funeral.
Al-Nasāʾī transmitted—through the judge of Marw—from him a ḥadīth. Al-Qawārīrī, however, did not begin writing ḥadīth until he was already advanced in age; had he started his quest earlier, he would have heard from Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim and his peers, yet hearing and meeting are matters governed by divine decree.
I read to Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq: al-Faṭḥ ibn ʿAbd al-Salām informed you; Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar the judge, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭarāʾifī, and Muḥammad ibn al-Dāyah informed us; they said:
Abū Jaʿfar ibn al-Muslima informed us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us; Jaʿfar al-Firyābī informed us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī and Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Muqaddimī narrated to us; they said:
Daylam ibn Ghazwān narrated to us; Maymūn al-Kurdī narrated to us, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, who said:
“I was with ʿUmar (1) when I heard him say in his sermon:
‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “The thing I fear most for my community is every hypocrite who is eloquent of tongue.” (2)’”
This ḥadīth has an acceptable chain; it is not found in the six canonical collections.
And Maymūn—concerning him
