101 – “al-‘Uthmānī,” Abū Marwān Muḥammad ibn ‘Uthmān ibn Khālid * (q)
The Imam and ḥadith scholar Abū Marwān Muḥammad ibn ‘Uthmān ibn Khālid al-Umawī, known as al-‘Uthmānī, from Madinah.
He narrated from his own father, and also from Ibrāhīm ibn Sa‘d, ‘Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Zinād, Muḥammad ibn Maymūn, ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim, and a number of others.
I have not come across any report of his that is authentically traced back to Mālik.
Among those who transmitted from him were: Ibn Mājah, Aḥmad ibn Zayd al-Qazzāz, Isḥāq al-Khuza‘ī, Baqī ibn Makhlad, Ja‘far al-Firyābī, ‘Imrān ibn Mujāshi‘, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Mandah, and others.
Ṣāliḥ Jazara said, “He is trustworthy and reliable, except that he relates objectionable reports from his father.”
Al-Bukhārī said, “Reliable.”
Mūsā ibn Hārūn stated that he died in 241 AH.
Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq informed us; al-Fatḥ informed us; al-Urmawī and others told us, saying:
“Ibn al-Muslima informed us; ‘Ubayd Allāh al-Zuhrī informed us; Ja‘far ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Abū Marwān narrated to us; ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim narrated from al-‘Alā’, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah:
that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Make haste to perform good deeds before you are overtaken by trials like pieces of a dark night: a man may wake up as a believer and end the day as a disbeliever, or end the day as a believer…’”
